When you think of Swedish cuisine, one dish immediately springs to mind: Köttbullar! The small, juicy fried meatballs in a creamy sauce are not only internationally renowned, but also a real comfort food - traditionally served with mashed potatoes and a spoonful of lingonberry jam. First soak the breadcrumbs in the milk and then mix thoroughly with the minced meat, egg, finely chopped onion, garlic, mustard, allspice, salt and pepper in a bowl. Shape the mixture into small meatballs about 3 cm in diameter.
Heat the oil in a pan and fry the Köttbullar until golden brown on all sides, which takes about 8 to 10 minutes. Then remove from the pan and set aside.
To make the cream sauce, melt a little butter in the same pan, stir in the flour and sauté briefly. Then deglaze with the beef stock and stir in the cream, soya sauce and mustard. Season the sauce with salt and pepper and simmer for about 5 minutes until it is nice and creamy.
Now return the Köttbullar to the pan and leave to stand in the sauce for a further 5 minutes.
To serve, serve the Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes, lingonberry jam and fresh parsley - and enjoy!
